The U.S. Powerball lottery never fails to amaze us!
On Monday, a lucky Powerball lottery ticket sold in Washington won the ninth-largest lottery prize in U.S. history.
The numbers for the much-awaited $754.6 million jackpot were 5, 11, 22, 23, and 69, with Powerball number 7. The Power Play for the drawing was 2. The lump sum payout for this single winning ticket is a whopping $407.2 million surely changing somebody's life overnight.
The winning lottery ticket was sold at the Fred Meyer located at 801 Auburn Way N in Auburn. The retail store that sold the winning ticket will be receiving a bonus of $50,000 for selling this ticket.
As per the records, it's the second time a Powerball jackpot has been won in the state of Washington. For the first time, there was a woman who won the $90 million jackpot in 2024 after buying a lottery ticket for the very first time in her life. Later, she went ahead with quitting her job at plane maker Boeing Co and buy a new Subaru.
The Powerball jackpot won on Monday night is the ninth-largest in US lottery history and the fifth-largest in Powerball history. The monetary award is the 13th largest ever given.
The jackpot winner can choose between receiving the $754.6 million in 30 graduated payments over 29 years or receiving the $407.2 million lump sum payment all at once. Each year, the annuity payments increase by 5%. All prize amounts are subject to federal taxes, the results of which can be found on The Lottery Lab's Tax Calculator page. There is no state tax on lottery winnings in Washington.
Washington lottery winners cannot claim their prizes anonymously. Although they can claim a lottery prize through a trust, no one will be able to learn the winner's name(s) (s). The Washington Lottery reports that "The Public Records Act applies to all documents held by the Washington Lottery because it is a government agency. Lottery winnings can be claimed in the name of a legal entity, such as a trust. However, if a public records request is made, the documents that comprise the artificial entity may be released, revealing the individual names of the winners."
The winner has 180 days to claim their prize.
Since November, when a ticket sold in Kansas won a $92.9 million jackpot, the Powerball jackpot had grown. The drawing on February 6th was the 34th since the last winner.
For Wednesday's drawing, the Powerball jackpot will be reset to $20 million.
The chances of winning Monday's grand prize were one in approximately 292 million. However, Powerball claims that one in every 24.87 tickets wins a prize starting at $4.
Six lucky players matched the first five numbers for a $1,000,000 prize in the Monday Powerball drawing: two from Michigan, three from New York, and one from Texas.
In addition, 72 tickets in the Monday drawing matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000. Sixteen of those tickets were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $100,000, and six were sold in California, where the prize was $18,550 for this drawing.
A second-prize win is doubled and any other non-jackpot prize is multiplied by the Power Play number drawn that evening when a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an additional $1 per ticket.
