An Australian woman ignored multiple calls from the Australian Lottery when they attempted to notify her of a $40 million (US$27.7 million) Powerball jackpot win.

An elusive lottery winner mistook incoming calls from The Lott for a scam and directed them to voicemail, unaware that she had become a multi-millionaire.

"Myself and the team at The Lott were ready to speak with Powerball's newest division one winner immediately after the result of tonight's draw," The Lott spokesperson Anna Hobdell said. "If you notice a flurry of missed calls on your phone, you might be the lucky winner we're trying to reach out to about the life-changing news."

The winning numbers in the Australian Powerball draw (unrelated to the USA Powerball game) were 2, 7, 15, 21, 24, 31, and 35 on Thursday, February 2, 2023. There was one division one winning ticket from Victoria, as well as 26 division two winning tickets worth $26,183.75 (US$18,154.37).

The lottery player's entry for the jackpot-winning ticket was linked to an online account, allowing the Lottery to contact winners. Despite this, The Lott could only advise players to double-check their tickets and wait for the winner to contact them.

"How exciting would it be to find out you've won $40 million at the end of the working week?" Hobdell continued. "There's no better way to start the weekend!"

The anonymous winner thankfully contacted The Lott soon after an initial press release about a jackpot winner who could not be reached was published. Her entire body went numb as a result.

"I assumed it was a scam!" she exclaimed. "This doesn't feel right. How can I tell if this is true?"

While the winner initially believed she was being conned, she did not answer her phone because she was at work.

"It's going to take some time for this to sink in," the Echuca resident told the Lottery. "It won't feel real until the funds are transferred into my bank account. My husband and I set these goals and were concerned about how we would achieve them; however, we no longer have to be concerned."

Work, on the other hand, was probably the last thing on her mind — there was a good chance she won't be showing up for work for much longer.

"Oh my God, I can quit the job!" she exclaimed. "I'll be able to spend some time with my family. We will be able to completely pay off our mortgage and set ourselves up for the future."

"We want this win to count for a long time," the winner said. "We want to leave a legacy for our family that will last for generations."
