A man from Michigan won two $110,000 Fantasy 5 Double Play prizes and credits himself for being cautious.

Due to a memory lapse and a moment of caution, an anonymous Michigan lottery player won a total of $220,000 in a Fantasy 5 Double Play drawing.

The lucky winner purchased a lottery ticket at the Sheridan EZ Mart on South Main Street in Sheridan before the Fantasy 5 drawing on December 17. Later that day, he went to another gas station but couldn't remember if he had bought a ticket earlier.

He bought another ticket at the Mobil gas station on West Main Street in Stanton to be safe.

"I've been playing Fantasy 5 for a long time and I always use the same sets of numbers," the player explained to the Michigan Lottery. "I was at the gas station and couldn't remember if I'd bought a ticket for the Fantasy 5 drawing that night, so I bought one just in case."

Each line on both tickets was identical, and one of them matched the winning numbers for the Dec. 17 Double Play drawing: 6, 11, 12, 16, and 29.

"I was on the Michigan Lottery website checking the numbers after the drawing, and when I saw the two locations where winning tickets were sold, I knew I had to be the big winner," the winner explained. "I checked my tickets and saw that I had won, but I thought I had won $55,000 on each of them. I felt relieved when I called the Lottery and they confirmed both tickets were $110,000 winners."

The 67-year-old had added the Double Play option to both of his Fantasy 5 tickets for an extra $1 per play, bringing the total spend from $10 to $20. In Fantasy 5, the top Double Play prize is $110,000, which is won by matching all five Double Play numbers. Prizes can be won in both the regular nightly drawing and the Double Play drawing.

Each Fantasy 5 ticket costs $1. In addition to the Double Play option, players can add the EZmatch feature for an additional $1 per play for a chance to win up to $500. Every day at 7:29 p.m. EST, Fantasy 5 drawings take place. On The Lottery Lab's Michigan Lottery Results page, you can find the winning numbers, jackpot, and prize amounts.
