The Virginia Lottery was established in 1987 when the people of the State voted in favor of the creation of the state lottery. The first ticket was sold by the lottery on September 20, 1988. The profit proceeds from the Virginia Lottery ticket sales are transferred to the K-12 public education. Nearly $650 million were the lottery's net profit for the year 2019, and is still for the future years and funded school funding in Virginia. As per the laws put out by Virginia, all unclaimed prizes go to the Virginia Literary Fund, which is used for educational purposes. As of 2019, more than $295 million of unclaimed prizes have been transferred to the literary funds. The largest jackpot ever won in the history of the Virginia Lottery was on February 20, 2004, a retired truck driver J.R. Triplett of Winchester won the Mega Millions jackpot worth $239 million. To date, nine Mega Millions jackpots and one Powerball jackpot have been won in Virginia.
