The Michigan Lottery came into existence with the Green Ticket game on November 13, 1972. The first $1 million lottery prize was won by Hermus Millsaps of Taylor, Michigan on February 22, 1973. Daily 3 was introduced with other Terminal based games which commenced on June 6, 1977. Following Daily 3, Daily 4 lottery was introduced in 1981. On August 13, 1984, the first “Michigan Lotto” was introduced by the lottery. Following them, Mega Millions and Fantasy 5 joined the club in 2002 and 2004 respectively. In 2019, the Michigan Lottery introduced the Double Play draws for both Fantasy 5 and Lotto 47, where-in an extra draw is held after each main game-draw and non-jackpot prizes are doubled.
Fantasy 5 was launched on September 12, 2004, replacing a lottery game called Rolldown.
The revenue generated from the sale of lottery tickets is transferred to the State General Fund, which is further divided among a variety of programs and initiatives of the State.
Since its establishment, the Michigan Lottery has donated more than $20 billion to the School Aid Fund to back the K-12 education. The lottery also puts in every effort to lift local businesses and support companies that employ the people of Michigan.

On March 25, 2018, Brian O. Neill was appointed tenth Commissioner of the Michigan Lottery. The Michigan Lottery mission is to maximize the net revenues to supplement state education programs. The commission also focuses on operating all games and bureau functions with nothing less than total integrity.
