On September 27, 1971, the Massachusetts State Lottery was established following the legalization of gambling by the Massachusetts General Court, the legislature of the Commonwealth. The Massachusetts Lottery has generated over $126 billion in revenues and awarded over $88 billion in prizes, since its first ticket was sold in March 1972. The Lottery has successfully returned over $27 billion in net profit to the Commonwealth for unrestricted local aid available to cities and towns and paid over $7.2 billion in commissions and bonuses to its statewide network of retailers.
