Maryland Lottery was established and created in January 1973, as a result of popular voting in 1972. The mission of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency is to generate revenue to support good causes in Maryland including public health, safety, education, human resources, and environmental initiatives. Since its establishment, the lottery has contributed over $16 billion in revenue to the State and more than $25.6 billion to lottery players. Maryland introduced Bonus Match 5 in September 1995 but ended soon in 1998. But the game was reintroduced by the lottery in 2002 following its popularity and exciting payouts structure.

The Maryland Lottery was formed as a State Lottery Agency by constitutional amendment 1972. The Commission oversees lottery and gaming operations and regulations. Seven members constitute the Commission and they are appointed to four-year terms by the Governor with Senate advice and consent.
