The Illinois Lottery was established on July 1, 1974. Back then Illinois was the only state lottery to have its drawings televised nationwide. Initially, the lottery sold “passive” games through weekly drawings. In 1980, the Illinois Lottery introduced Pick 3 as its first terminal game. Pick 3 induced a new winning streak into the lottery. The game rocketed the sales to $164 million during its first year of operation.
Originally Pick 3 was introduced as The Daily Game on February 19, 1980. It started as a single-drawing game that was held on Monday through Saturday evenings. The lottery introduced Sunday drawings for Pick 3 on March 20, 1983. Ten years later Pick 3 expanded to 13 draws weekly with the addition of Midday draws on December 20, 1993. Since its establishment, the Illinois Pick 3 plus FIREBALL, has been producing a notable amount of winners.

The State Lottery Commission of Illinois is operated by Camelot Illinois. Northstar Lottery Group became the Lottery’s first private manager on July 1, 2011. With his assistance, it became the first US lottery to sell tickets on March 25, 2012.
The lottery profits initially went to State's General Revenue Fund, until legislation was passed in 1985 earmarking profits for the Common School Fund, which is still the Lottery's major benefactor. In 2010, the Lottery began contributing to the Capitol Projects Fund, which helps build and renovate state roads and bridges.
