On one hand, winning a lottery is a life-changing event for the lottery players but no one is oblivious of the negative impact it can have on an individual’s life. There are heartbreaking instances of unlucky winners who lost everything because they were not attentive enough. Some lottery winners were just unlucky while some made a fool out of themselves. Some lottery associations support anonymous lottery claims because they care for the safety of their winners. Then there are instances like the Robert Edmond case, where fraudsters were caught because they were forced to claim their winnings publicly.
As they say, modern problems require modern solutions. In a funny instance, a Jamaican lottery winner claimed his winnings while wearing a Scream mask to protect his identity from his relatives because he didn’t want to hand out his money to them!
The winner identified himself by the name A. Campbell and claimed his prize in a ceremony at the Spanish Court Hotel in Kingston on February 5. He went so far as to wear gloves to hide every inch of his skin to keep himself from getting identified by his relatives. He came forward 54 days after the drawing because Supreme Ventures, which runs the lottery, published a warning to the then-unknown-winner to claim their winnings worth $158,400,000 Jamaican dollars before the 90-day deadline. The total winning amount is about $1.2 million in USD. The winner claims that the winning numbers came to him in a dream and he’s been sick ever since winning.
“My head hurt me for three days because I was thinking so much. [Wondering] if what I've been longing for really come true. I had a belly ache for two weeks, sometimes I feel so much pain I forgot that I had won”, says the masked winner. “I plan to use the money to get a new house. I want to get a nice house. I haven't found it yet, but I'll be looking for one soon”, he added.
Campbell said he got the idea of wearing the Scream mask from a woman who wore an emoji mask to claim her winnings 8 months ago. Since remaining perfectly anonymous isn’t an option, he wants to keep a low profile and maintain his privacy to some extent. Nobody wants people coming after you asking for money, especially your relatives.
